Steve Smalley is a shareholder in Ogletree Deakins’ Raleigh office. His global immigration practice focuses on providing customized immigration services and global account management to major multinational and domestic organizations across a variety of industries, including banking and financial services, information technology, healthcare and medical, biotech, retail and manufacturing. Steve counsels clients on complex immigration matters and assists companies in developing and managing successful global immigration programs. He is widely recognized for this strategic legal counsel and his extensive experience with all facets of corporate immigration including nonimmigrant visas, permanent residence and naturalization.
In 2006, Steve founded the firm’s outbound global mobility practice enabling Ogletree Deakins to serve as a single-source for global and U.S. immigration services. He worked in partnership with Emigra Worldwide, a leading global immigration firm, to provide seamless and consistent immigration services throughout the world. Emigra now operates as Newland Chase and offers an expanded brick and mortar footprint and enhanced business traveler capabilities through its business visa branch, CIBT. Steve works in conjunction with Newland Chase, directing the delivery of worldwide immigration services and developing global solutions for clients that integrate both business and immigration strategy.
Steve regularly advises clients regarding immigration compliance, including I-9 audits and defense, discrimination, Social Security “No-Match” issues, and identity theft. He represents employers in government enforcement actions brought by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Department of Labor.
Steve has been named to the Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite*. He has a Yellow Belt certification from Legal Lean Sigma. He is a frequent lecturer and presenter, and has served as a speaker regarding international recruiting in the software and high technology fields, employer compliance and I-9 and immigration compliance.
Prior to his position with Ogletree Deakins, Steve was an attorney with an immigration and nationality law firm in Washington, D.C., where he practiced in the area of business-related immigration law in partnership with the former Commissioner of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. Other previous experience includes handling civil litigation and trial matters.
